The library program in Livingston Parish continues to flourish.  Many innovative and exciting things take place as the library serves a major role in the instructional field.  The libraries in this parish serve as a hub for the instructional program.

This year marks the opening of several new libraries in Livingston Parish.  New libraries were built at Springfield Elementary, Live Oak Elementary, and Seventh Ward Elementary.  These are very beautiful facilities and greater enhance the programs at each school.  The Doyle High Library was remodeled this year to allow for the expanded program taking place at the school.  Walker Junior High Library will also be expanded in the near future, while provisions have been made to set a new library at Frost school.

Many of the school libraries are involved in many different programs.  Some of the programs, such as the accelerated reader in elementary and middle schools have supplemented the regular instructional program thus enabling our students to read better.  Other programs such as World Book-on-line (recently implemented) will provide greater resources for research for our students.  All libraries have Internet access and students and teachers are making good use of the availability of the teaching materials that are now right at their fingertips.

Finally, more improvements are on the way for 1999.  We will attempt this year to upgrade all library computer programs from DOS version to a windows-based program.  This will allow librarians to do multitasking.  We will also upgrade some old model computers so that the new programs will be more accessible.  We will also begin to upgrade our library standards, meaning we will become more media based than use of printed materials.

Livingston has an excellent Library Program that is designed to meet the needs of all the students.  We must continue to improve our programs that are second to none in the State of Louisiana.

Title VI Program

Title VI (formerly Chapter 2) is a federally funded program provided by Section 14306 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended by Improving America's School Act of 1994.

The funds for participation in this program and for public and eligible non-public schools must be used to supplement rather than supplant the goals as indicated in the project.

Central office personnel developed a uniform need assessment worksheet and distributed it to each school in the district.  The school's staff compiled a list of needs at the local school sites.  This need assessment was used to plan the use of funds.

The Livingston Parish School System will focus on the acquisition of library resources and provide the necessary support to complete the computerization and upgrading of software for the school libraries.  Acquisition will include supplemental library materials (books and periodicals), computer software, computer hardware, on-line services, and supplemental resources.  Professional development is also included in this grant.

The support aspect of the program allows for installation of new programs and conversion of an entire library to the new system.

Title VI funds are used so that a school district can provide up-to-date information to our students, thus ensuring opportunities to increase student performance.

Title VI Total Budget 1998-99= $100,857
Expenditures*   =    $100,857
Receipts       =         $100,857

*Library resources, software, support, hardware, and conversions.
